Centre Hastings McConnell Funeral Home Peewee team made their 2017-18 season debut this weekend at the Stirling Blues Icebreaker Tournament.

The team finished the 5-team tournament with 2-2 record overall and did not advance to the finals, but played really consistently over the two days.  Head coach John Croskery was very pleased with the camaraderie of the team.

“Because it was the first tournament of the year, we were looking for the team to gel”, said Croskery.  “The fact that all the teams were so closely matched made it a great tournament”.

Game one Saturday morning was against Stirling.  It was a high pace game with both teams playing very strong.  Despite many efforts the Grizzlies weren’t able to get one past the Stirling goalie, Aiden Allen,  and had a loss of 2-0.  Jacob Heard earned the Player of the Game.

Game Two Saturday morning was against the Durham Crusaders.  Again a strong game from the Grizzlies.  Carson VanAllen got the Grizzlies on the score board with an unassisted goal.  But Crusaders made a strong comeback with a 3-1 final.  Aaron McMaster  was Player of the Game.

Game three  Sunday morning was against Gananoque.  It was a tight game with Grizzlies opening the scoring early in the first scored by Sam Fluke and assisted by Jacob Heard and Owen Meraw- Gilbey.  Gan came back with a goal.  Aaron McMaster evened it up again with a goal assisted by Nolan Arseneault.  Gan evened the game up ending the first period.  They took the lead by a goal in the second period and were feeling pretty good when Grizzlies were handed a six minute penalty midway through the third period.  Grizzlies dug deep though and scored three short handed goals by Aaron McMaster  (assisted by Samuel Gale) Carson VanAllen (assisted by Samuel Gale) and Sam Fluke (assisted by Jacob Heard and Samuel Gale).  Gan did come back with another goal but Grizzlies held their one goal lead winning the game 5-4.  Jackson Croskery played outstanding in net keeping the boys in the game multiple times! Sam Fluke earned player of the game.

Game four was Sunday afternoon.  Sam Fluke opened the scoring early in the first period with an unassisted goal against Loyalist Jets.  Owen Meraw-Gilbey scored late in the first (assisted by Samuel Gale) to give the Grizzlies a two goal lead.  Nick Kyryliuk earned his first shut out as a Grizzly and Player of the Game winning 2-0.

Unfortunately the Finalist for the tourney was determined by points for and against and Grizzlies were eliminated but a great weekend and season icebreaker was had by all! Next game is Saturday Oct 7th in Napanee.
