Peewee Grizzlies open season with a tight game against Napanee AE

On Saturday afternoon, the McConnell Peewees took to the road for their first league game of the season against the Napanee Stars AE team.  It was a very close game, but ultimately the Grizzlies fell just short, losing 6-5.

The Grizzlies were leading at the end of the first 2-0 with goals from Sam Fluke (assisted by  Owen Meraw-Gilbey and Jacob Heard) and Carson Van Allen (assisted by Jackson Croskery and Aaron McMaster).

The Stars fought back in the second period with two goals of their own.  However, the Grizzlies jumped into the lead again with another goal by Fluke (assisted by Heard and Nolan Arseneault).

*The game would be decided in the third period, however, as the Stars tallied four more goals and the Grizzlies could only reply with two.  The Grizzlies 2 goals were scored by Van Allen, with assists from Samuel Gale, Arseneault, Heard and Fluke.

While Grizzlies head coach John Croskery was very pleased with the effort of his team in the first period, he was a little disappointed with how the team allowed Napanee to get back in the game.

“We had a very successful first period,” he said.  “And perhaps from that the players thought we could cruise and still win.  In the second, we stopped forechecking and pressuring their puck-carriers.  I think we learned that we cannot let off on the gas like that against good teams.”

The McConnell Peewees’ next games are on Wednesday in Napanee, Thursday in Brighton, Saturday in Frontenac, and a home game on Sunday, October 15th against Frontenac at 2:45pm in Marmora.

The Centre Hastings Grizzlies began their first power skating sessions early last Saturday in Marmora with Chris Longo.  Longo is a very experienced instructor and is in high-demand in the hockey community.  In total, the Grizzlies will benefit from six Saturday sessions with Longo.
